Finally!! The first mini-golf game of the year. I was starting to feel like the weather was never going to warm up. As I was meeting a new friend from MA, Max’s in Tyngsboro was about halfway between his place and my home in NH so it made sense.

If you remember my pitiful score from last year, you’ll notice I took 3 strokes off this time through. While still a bit over par thanks to one super frustrating hole (number 15) I was pleased with that improvement. Perhaps playing with a “real golfer” challenging me made a difference!

In general, my comments from last year stand. It’s a fun course and still one of my favorites. The goats were back this year, though the bird house in the goat area needs some work. The front had fallen off and was in pieces on the ground. (Hopefully the goats don’t eat it or step on it and get hurt). The major part of the house was still atop the pole, but with straw and other bird nest materials teetering.

Also disappointing this time, the majority of the water features weren’t on yet, including the bumper boats. Maybe it’s still too early, but I think the danger of frost has finally passed. In addition, they should look at re-staining the picnic tables under the tent. They were peeling and got both of us covered with bits of peeling stain.

As you all know, my biggest pet peeve is an untidy course and this year Max’s was sadly lacking in that area, which resulted in the decrease in rating from last year. A few leaves or pine needles here and there is one thing. This was a mess. In several places, I was wishing for a hand vac to clean the green before my putt. Even the cave hole, which you’d think would be protected from such debris, had leaves and bits of mulch.

I truly hope the staff at Max’s cleans this up and takes care of the water features and bird house. I’d hate to see such a fun course fall into disrepair.

My advice: if you play here, be prepared to clean up debris and try not to look too hard at maintenance issues. It’s still a fun course and the ice cream is still great. Go and have fun, just don’t expect perfection.
